Fine finishes

Surfaces that are the design

Lacquer, limewash and plaster, for rooms where the finish is chosen with the drawings.

These finishes show the hand that made them. A lacquered door and a limewashed wall are both only as good as the surface under them, so most of the time on a job goes into the substrate, and none of it into hurrying the coats.

We make a sample of every finish before anything is ordered: on a board for lacquer, and on a patch of your own wall for limewash and plaster.

Finishes

Three finishes we are asked for

  • Millwork and doors

    Lacquer

A hard, even coat sprayed on doors, paneling, cabinets and furniture. Built up in thin layers and rubbed between coats.

  • Walls and exteriors

    Limewash

A mineral wash that dries to a soft, cloudy matt. It shows brush marks on purpose, so the walls are laid out and finished in one pass.

  • Walls and ceilings

    Plaster

A troweled surface in thin coats, burnished or left matt, for walls and ceilings where the surface is the design.

The days

From sample to handover

Timing depends on the area and the finish. The proposal gives day ranges for your rooms, and drying times are set by the product data sheet.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Substrate

The wall or door is repaired, sanded and primed to suit the finish.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Sample

A board or a patch on site, judged in the room's own light and signed off.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Finish

Coats are applied in order, with drying time between them.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Handover

A walk-through in morning and evening light, then touch-ups.

Questions

About fine finishes

Can I see a sample first?

Always. Nothing is ordered until you have seen the finish on a board or on your own wall.

How do limewash and plaster wear?

Both are natural, matt surfaces that mark and age with use. We say what to expect for your room at the walkthrough, and what care it needs.

Is lacquer practical on a kitchen door?

Lacquer is a hard coat, and it is sprayed in our shop, where dust and temperature are controlled. The terms of any warranty are in your written warranty.
