Fine finishing · Greenwich, Connecticut

The finish should be the last thing you notice

Kang Fine Finishes paints, lacquers and plasters the interiors of Greenwich houses, and their exteriors when the house asks for it. We work for homeowners, and for the designers and architects who specify the finish.

A cut line, a sample board and a room ready to paint. We photograph what we are judged on.

To the trade

For designers, architects and builders

Send the finish schedule and the drawings. Wendell Grant reads them, walks the site with you and writes one proposal in the format your office uses.

Trade terms are agreed in writing, project by project.

The work

Interiors first, then everything that touches them

  1. Walls, ceilings, doors and trim, in empty houses and lived-in ones. Prepared by hand, finished in the sheen each room needs.

  2. Lacquer, limewash and plaster, for rooms where the surface is the design.

  3. Kitchens, built-ins, paneling and stairs, sprayed in our shop or on site.

  4. Clapboard, shingle and trim, painted on the dry days spring to late fall allow.

How a project runs

Five steps, in this order

Nothing is ordered until the sample board is approved, and nothing is painted until the surface is ready.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Walkthrough

A project lead walks the rooms with you, or with your designer, and notes every surface, repair and sheen.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Written proposal

Surfaces, coats, products and preparation, line by line, so it can be read against the drawings.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Sample board

Your colors painted on a board or a wall, looked at in the room's own light before anything is ordered.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Preparation and finish

Floors and fittings protected, repairs made, surfaces primed and sanded, then the finish coats.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Handover

A walk-through with you, a list of touch-ups, and the rooms cleaned before we leave.

What the people who specify us say

“They asked for the sheen on the schedule before they asked for dates. The doors came back with edges I could not fault, and the site was swept every evening.”

Concetta S.Interior designer, Greenwich

“Their proposal followed our finish schedule line by line, so the contractor and the client were reading the same page.”

Tibor R.Architect, Stamford

“Three weeks with painters in the house and I never moved a piece of furniture twice. The paper and plastic came down clean.”

Questions

Before you call

How do you quote a job?

A project lead visits, then we send a written proposal listing the surfaces, the preparation, the coats, the products and the sheens. We don't quote from photographs alone.

Do I choose the paint?

You or your designer set the colors and sheens. We recommend a product for each surface, and the product data sheet is yours to read before we order.

Do I have to move out?

No. We protect floors and furniture, work room by room and clean each evening. Some finishes, like lacquer, are sprayed in our shop instead.

My house was built before 1978. What changes?

Federal rules apply to paid work that disturbs paint in homes and child-occupied buildings built before 1978: the firm has to be certified by the EPA under its Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, and a certified renovator has to lead the job. Paint in a house of that age is treated as lead paint unless a test says otherwise. The work area is sealed, the paint is wet-scraped or vacuumed rather than dry-sanded, and the floors are cleaned and checked before the room is handed back. Our firm number is listed under Credentials.

Can you work from our finish schedule?

Yes. Send the schedule and drawings and we write the proposal against them.

Tell us about the house

Where it is, what needs finishing, and who else is on the project. A project lead replies in office hours to set a walkthrough.
